21% rise in affordable homes in Scotland

The latest quarterly housing statistics reported that 8,767 affordable homes were delivered throughout Scotland for the year up to September 2018; a 21% increase on the 7,271 completions during 2017.

Affordable Home Approvals

Over the three quarters of 2018, there were 11,565 approvals of affordable housing, an improvement of 9% on 2017’s figures. Social rent approvals accounted for 63% of the total approvals, with home ownership making up 22% and affordable rent 16%.

Within Q3 (July-September 2018), 1,637 affordable houses were approved. This was 18% - or 361 homes - less than Q3 in 2017.

Affordable Housing Completions

Compared with the same quarter in 2017, Q3 saw an increase of 23%, or 386, completed affordable homes between July and September; a total of 2,063 houses. This positive figure includes increases in social rent completions (which was up by 19% or 864 homes) and affordable homeownership completions (up by 26% or 635 homes).

Affordable House Starts

Despite a fall of 4% – or 87 – homes during Q3 2018 compared with Q3 2017, in the year to end September, 10,198 affordable homes were started; an increase of 2% on last year’s 9,992 homes.

Scotland beats England for affordable homes

Since 2014, Scotland has seen an average of 137 homes per 100,000 population; this is 50% more than the amount seen in England (86 per 100,00). Scotland has also provided five times as many social rented properties than England.

Kevin Stewart, Housing Minister, concluded:

“I am proud that this Government has now delivered more than 80,000 affordable homes since 2007. This is a significant achievement – boosting supply of affordable homes in communities right across the country.

"During the course of this Parliament we are investing more than £3 billion to deliver our target of at least 50,000 affordable, high-quality homes, including 35,000 homes for social rent.”
